Pigeons

Living in New York City, I've never been a fan of pigeons—I couldn't imagine anyone actually liking them! But, I was today years old when I learned these five fun facts about pigeons: 1. Pigeons can recognize themselves in a mirror, one of the few animals with this ability. 2. They were used as message carriers in wars, delivering crucial information over long distances. 3. Pigeons have extraordinary navigation skills; they use the sun and Earth's magnetic field to find their way. 4. They can fly at up to 60 mph and cover more than 600 miles in a single day. 5. My granddaughters told me about a spot they call Pigeon Alley. It’s a sidewalk near the George Washington Bridge covered by scaffolding where pigeons nest above. The pigeons regularly drop poop on unsuspecting pedestrians. My granddaughters have taught me to run down that sidewalk with my purse held over my head for protection.
